But her eccentric behaviors kind of made him embarrassed and uncomfortable because it was a lot at once. I think gray was always interested in Juvia but only started having feels for her after/during Tenrou. Very awkwardly and against social norms because she doesn’t know them that well. So I think she’s a very anxious and awkward person which is why she expresses herself the way she does. Juvia was alone almost all of her life and was likely starved for any kind of close friendship/relationship she could get. So he had a pretty normal life up until that point. You’ve got gray who comes from tragedy and lost both his parents and his master while he was powerless to do anything about it. More I thought about the more their relationship is explained through their characters. No grand confessions needed - she knew his actions spoke louder than his words. And more recently in the manga sequel, Juvia teased Gray about his sort of confession, but when he told her to cut it out and instead just hugged her, she was okay with it. In the balcony scene during the Alvarez arc, she was perfectly fine with Gray's promise to give her an answer after the war. At the end of Tartaros, she was even ready to give up on her love for him because of what she did. Yes, she kind of always teased and embarrassed him, but she never forced him to confess or love her back. He's actually really nice to her and even though she embarrassed him a lot of times, he hadn't tried to actively avoid her or drive her away.Īs for Juvia, she can be overwhelming, but you'll see during serious moments how deep her feelings for Gray are. He accompanied her on missions, ate caramade franks with her, protected and saved her many times. Gray has always treated Juvia as a friend early on. I don't think so because I've always seen Juvia's antics as comic relief. Long story short, this was a case of persistence paying off, as she gave Gray consistency and unconditional, unwavering love, something his heart desperately needed. They both wanted to protect and be apart of those futures every step of the way). (Hence his and Natsu's rage at Juvia's and Lucy's futures being 'stolen'. I think he tried to make Juvia on that same level of family, but he couldn't- she was the type of family to build a future with. Granted, Fairy Tail, particularly Erza, Natsu, and as of late, Wendy and Lucy, have become family to him. Though he may not of thought it consciously, he was protecting himself from that level of hurt again by never allowing someone to get that close. Someone analyzed that the reason he found it so difficult to accept her is because he's gone through the repeated traumatic experience of losing those he held dearest. She definitely wasn't his girlfriend (though as of recent chapters she practically is), but she no longer fell into a completely platonic role either. As seen in more serious moments of life or death, her genuinely presenting her feelings (the scarf episode, her apologizing for killing his farther, her devastation for him leaving her unannounced, etc), or having some like Erza or Lyon tell him to stop avoiding giving her an answer, he had to think about where he stood with her. He started to accept her gifts, touches, and declarations of love, though he playfully rebutted with something to detract for the statement. She slowly grew on Gray, which is why his 'disgusted/fearful' reactions held less and less genuine energy overtime. Granted he's shown to be more lenient/polite/old-fashioned towards girls, he got especially upset when she was excessively hurt, even more so when she was hurt in defense of others (i.e, himself, a child, etc). eccentric, but Gray wasn't completely repulsed by her, for most of the series he protected her as he would anyone in the guild.
